Safe Baby Products in Medicine Hat — What I Actually Put on My Kids' Skin

My oldest daughter had eczema.

If you've been through that with a child, you know the feeling. The constant scanning of ingredient labels. The process of elimination — new detergent, new soap, new lotion — trying to figure out what's triggering it. The guilt of not knowing sooner. The frustration of products that claim to be "gentle" or "for sensitive skin" but are still packed with ingredients you'd need a chemistry degree to decode.

That experience sent me down a rabbit hole I never came out of. And honestly? I'm grateful for it.

Side note: what actually ended up making the biggest difference for my daughter's eczema? Cod liver oil capsules. I'm not a doctor and I'm not here to give medical advice — but if you're in the thick of it and feeling desperate, it might be worth a conversation with your pediatrician. Just saying.

Because what I learned about what's in conventional baby products — the stuff marketed with soft colours and pictures of smiling infants — was enough to change how I approached everything we used in our home. Not just for my daughter, but for all three of my kids. They all inherited my DNA (you're welcome, kiddos), which means sensitive skin runs deep in our house. So I got very intentional, very fast.
I didn't discover Carina Organics until later — my kids were well past the baby stage by the time I started building the shelves at Roots Refillery. But I can tell you without hesitation: if this line had been on my radar when my daughter was small, it would have been the first thing I reached for. And even now, with older kids who still have sensitive skin? I'd reach for Carina without hesitation. The baby line is gentle enough for babies but honestly, gentle enough for anyone in our house.
That's a big part of why Carina Organics earned a permanent spot on our shelves.

Why "Baby" Doesn't Automatically Mean Safe

Here's something that surprises a lot of parents: the word "baby" on a product label is a marketing term, not a safety standard. There's no regulation in Canada that requires a product labelled for babies to meet a higher ingredient standard than one labelled for adults.
That means "baby" shampoo, "baby" bubble bath, and "baby" lotion can still contain:

  • Synthetic fragrances — a single ingredient listed as "fragrance" can legally contain hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, some of which are known irritants and hormone disruptors
  • Parabens — preservatives that mimic estrogen in the body, linked to hormone disruption
  • Sulfates — harsh surfactants that strip the skin's natural oils and are particularly problematic for eczema-prone skin
  • PEGs (polyethylene glycols) — used as thickeners and penetration enhancers, they can increase the skin's absorption of other harmful ingredients

For babies and young children, this matters more than it does for adults. Their skin is thinner, their surface area relative to body weight is larger, and their detox pathways aren't fully developed. What sits on their skin doesn't just stay there.

What I Look for Instead

When I was navigating my daughter's eczema, I developed a pretty clear checklist for anything that was going on her skin:

  • No synthetic fragrance — scent from certified organic botanical extracts only, or fragrance-free entirely
  • No parabens, sulfates, or PEGs
  • Short, recognizable ingredient lists — if I can't picture where an ingredient comes from, that's a flag
  • Hypoallergenic and vegan — fewer potential triggers
  • Made in Canada — I want to know who's making it and under what standards

Carina Organics checks every single one of those boxes. It's why I carry them, and it's why I would use them on my own kids.

The Carina Organics Baby Line — What We Carry at Roots Refillery

Carina Organics has been making all-natural hair and skin care products since 1972 — long before "clean beauty" was a marketing trend. Everything is handcrafted in small batches on the North Shore of Vancouver, using certified organic plant, vegetable, flower, and tree extracts. The ingredient lists are short, recognizable, and completely free of parabens, sulfates, silicones, synthetic preservatives, and artificial fragrance.
Here's what we carry from their baby line at Roots Refillery:

Baby Shampoo & Body Wash

A gentle daily cleanser formulated specifically for baby's delicate skin and scalp. Scented lightly with sweet pea flower — soft, natural, and nothing like the artificial "baby scent" you find in conventional products. Hypoallergenic, vegan, and safe from a newborn's very first bath. It's exactly the kind of product I was searching for when my daughter was small and couldn't find.

Baby Bubble Bath

Same gentle formula, same sweet pea scent, designed to make bath time fun without the harsh ingredients that can irritate sensitive or eczema-prone skin. Mild enough for a newborn, which means it's mild enough for anyone.

Baby Lotion

A light, fast-absorbing moisturizer formulated with certified organic botanical extracts. Fragrance-free, which makes it ideal for babies with reactive skin or parents who want to keep things as simple as possible. No greasy residue, no mystery ingredients — just calm, hydrated skin.
All three products are refillable at Roots Refillery, which means you're not buying a new plastic bottle every time you run out. You just bring your container back and fill it up.

The Connection Most Parents Miss

When my daughter was dealing with eczema, I was laser-focused on what I was putting directly on her skin. It took me a while to realize that what I was washing her pyjamas and bedding with mattered just as much — maybe more, because those surfaces are in contact with her skin for hours at a time.

If you're navigating sensitive skin or eczema with your little one, the products on their body are only part of the picture. The laundry detergent, the surface cleaner, even the dish soap on the bottles and bowls they touch — all of it can be a trigger. At Roots Refillery we carry a full range of non-toxic, refillable cleaning and laundry products that work alongside the Carina baby line to create a genuinely low-irritant home environment.

It's the whole-home approach I wish someone had handed me years ago.
